сейчас в мире существует четыре поколения и более десяти технологий мобильной передачи данных, как аналоговых, так и цифровых, причём цифровые мобильные технологии (GSM, CDMA, TDMA, PDC, IDEN, W-CDMA) активно вытесняют аналоговые (только голосовые) стандарты. Мировым лидером как по числу абонентов, так и по приросту абонентской базы в 2006 г. была технология сотовой связи 2-2,5 поколения (2-2,5G) - GSM/GPRS/EDGE; её перспективный вариант - HSDPA - будет обеспечивать самую высокую скорость, от одного до четырёх Мбит/с. Технология CDMA предполагает переход от CDMA2000-1x к более скоростной версии 1x EV-DV, которая будет иметь реальные скорости на уровне до 1 Мбит/с
